Mini-split installation has become the single most-requested HVAC service across the Columbia River Gorge — in Hood River community forums, in The Dalles Facebook groups, and in our own call volume over the last few years. The reason is straightforward: a large share of homes in both cities were built before central ductwork was standard. Craftsman bungalows in Hood River, mid-century ranch homes in The Dalles — adding ducted systems to these houses means tearing up walls, ceilings, and attics. Ductless mini-splits solve the problem without the construction: one outdoor unit, wall-mounted indoor heads, and refrigerant lines through a 3-inch hole. Most single-zone installs take a day or less.
Why Mini-Splits Work Well in the Gorge
- Older housing stock — A significant share of homes in Hood River and The Dalles were built without forced-air systems. Mini-splits add heating and cooling without invasive ductwork.
- Additions and detached spaces — Converted garages, ADUs, workshops, and sunrooms are ideal mini-split applications. Extending existing ductwork to these spaces is rarely practical.
- Climate efficiency — Modern mini-splits operate efficiently down to -13°F outdoor temperatures. Given the Gorge's relatively mild winters, a mini-split can cover 90%+ of your heating load. In The Dalles, where winters run colder than Hood River, cold-climate models from Mitsubishi and Daikin are worth the investment.
- Zone control — Multi-zone systems let you set different temperatures in different rooms. You stop paying to heat or cool rooms you're not using.
- High local demand — We've installed dozens of systems across the Gorge and know the common complications: older electrical panels that need upgrades, irregular wall assemblies in historic homes, access challenges in The Dalles hillside properties. Less experienced installers learn on the job; we don't.
Brands We Install
- Mitsubishi Electric — The Hyper-Heat line delivers full heating capacity down to 5°F outdoor temperature, making it a practical choice for The Dalles and other east Gorge locations with harder winters.
- Daikin — Strong cold-climate performance and a broad product line, including systems that integrate with existing ductwork for hybrid applications.
- Other major brands — We also install Fujitsu, LG, and Carrier systems depending on application and customer preference.
Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone
A single-zone system is right for one room, a detached space, or a specific comfort problem. A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to multiple indoor heads — more efficient than running several single-zone systems and gives you room-by-room control from one outdoor unit.
What Installation Looks Like
Most single-zone installs in Hood River and The Dalles take four to six hours. Multi-zone systems typically take one to two days. We handle everything: mounting indoor heads, setting the outdoor unit, running and insulating refrigerant lines, electrical connections, system vacuum and charge, and a full walkthrough before we leave.
