Replacing or upgrading an HVAC system is one of the larger investments a homeowner makes, and one where getting the details right pays off for years. An undersized system won't keep up on a 100°F Gorge summer day. An oversized system short-cycles, wears out faster, and leaves your home feeling clammy. We install systems throughout the Columbia River Gorge — Hood River, The Dalles, and everything in between — and we perform proper load calculations on every job so you get a system sized for your actual home, not just whatever was there before.
Systems We Install
- Central air conditioners — Full replacement of aging AC units paired with existing or new ductwork. We install high-efficiency units rated 16 SEER2 and above.
- Gas furnaces — Single-stage, two-stage, and modulating furnaces sized to your home's heat loss and duct system. The Dalles homes tend to need more heating capacity than Hood River homes at similar square footage due to harder winters on the east end of the Gorge.
- Heat pumps — Air-source heat pumps for year-round heating and cooling in one system. Cold-climate models work efficiently through Gorge winters without depending on backup heat.
- Ductless mini-split systems — The most-requested installation across the Gorge right now. See our mini-split installation page for specifics.
- Dual-fuel systems — A heat pump paired with a gas furnace backup. The heat pump handles most of the load efficiently; the furnace kicks in during the hardest freezes. A practical choice for The Dalles area where cold snaps are more common than in Hood River.
The Installation Process
- Load calculation — We measure your home, assess insulation, window area, and sun exposure to calculate the right system capacity. This is the step many contractors skip. We don't.
- Equipment selection — We present options based on your budget, efficiency goals, and comfort priorities, with honest pros and cons for each.
- Installation — A typical HVAC replacement takes one to two days. We protect your home during installation, complete all electrical and refrigerant connections, and commission the system before we leave.
- Testing and walkthrough — We run the system through a full cycle, verify airflow at every register, and walk you through the thermostat and controls before we close out the job.
When Replacement Makes More Sense Than Repair
Furnaces over 15 years old running at 80% efficiency are strong candidates for replacement — modern high-efficiency units run at 95–98% AFUE, which means meaningful gas savings every winter. Air conditioners more than 12–15 years old often use R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured. A new system on current refrigerant is more efficient and not dependent on a dwindling supply.
